CONVENOR For further information, please phone Lesley on 01435 865 626.
Lesley is also the author of the popular blog Thrifty Lesley, where she demonstrates via 800+ recipes and meal plans, how to feed yourself for £1'ish a day. Do come over and have a look and say hello, you'd be very welcome! There is also a Facebook Group, currently with over 18,000 members
We had no meetings for a few months as my son-in-law passed away at the end of January 2025 leaving his daughter on her own. She now lives with us, then in April, Mike, my husband had a stroke, so I had zero time available for anything else. The group restarted in September 2025
Lesley needs to spend time with her husband during his last few months so the group is temporarily not meeting. She'll be back!

Cooking Up a Storm - December 2025
I accidentally chose three recipes that all needed oven time this month, which led to some juggling and a bit of time over run. First up was a recipe I created a few years ago to use up leftover Christmas mincemeat - muffins These muffins are tender and delicious, especially still warm, straight from the…

Cooking Up a Storm - October 2024
We made some very quick recipes from Jamie Oliver's new book Simply Jamie this month. We started off with one that needed to go in the oven. Lots of veg chopped up, seasoned and roasted, with a block of feta in the. middle and served over flavoured couscous. Simple, variable and delicious. Next up was…

Cooking Up a Storm - July 2024
Well what a lot of disappointing selection of recipes I chose for us to make in July! First up was an Ajo Blanco Dressing from the usually ever reliable Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, his book How To Eat 30 Plants In A Week. It was extremely bland. I added several flavourings to it to try and rescue…

Cooking Up a Storm - June 2024
First we made Cheese Baked Broccoli Fritters from Nagi Maehashi's book, Dinner. The recipe uses a whole head of broccoli cut very small, eggs, seasonings and cheddar. The mix is then shaped into fritters and baked in the oven. Very very tasty! Nagi writes the Australian food blog RecipeTinEats and her recipes are amazing! I…

Cooking Up a Storm - May 2024
May 2024 - this month we made Pineapple Nut Bread, stuffed with pineapple and pecans. Rather than 1 big loaf, we made it in individual mini loaf tins to make it easier to divide and carry off home. Similarly with a 3 Ingredient Chocolate Caramel Tart, individual tartlet cases were used. This contains just Mars…

Cooking Up a Storm - March 2024
March 2024 - we were only 4 today as several members had other commitments or were away. This month we made some lemon jam using lemon carcasses that had previously been zested and juiced, so would have been composted. Always satisfying making something from nothing! Then we made a super simple sweetcorn soup A chocolate…

Cooking Up a Storm in 2023
In this year we explored making Nutella healthier, a delicious vegan pate made with sweet potato, currants, pine nuts and onions; a chicken and mushroom crumble. A gorgeous no bowl chocolate and nut bake, an aubergine ragu and attempted to make vegan mayonnaise - a rare failure We didn't meet after July in 2023 as…

Cooking Up A Storm in 2022
In 2022 we made a vegetable roulade, double potato and halloumi bake, a chicken and sun dried tomato sandwich paste, cauliflower tots, date and tamarind chutney, chilla's sweet and sour onions, lemon and mint pesto, courgette, black olive and rice gratin - and many other things too

Cooking Up A Storm in 2021
During 2021, we made Christmas nibbles, explored risotto and gnocchi, and made all the components of a meal (chicken shawarma, a salad, a tahini dressing a pitta)

Cooking Up A Storm in 2020
During 2020, we were in Lockdown, so had to meet via Zoom. We covered French apple jam, Nigel Slater recipes and some delicious ones from a vegan book called Thug that is very sweary!
